How to Seal a Watercolor Painting?
Generally, any liquid on a watercolor painting will cause the paint to smear and run, destroy the artwork in the process. 1. Use a wax varnish. there are lots of different wax varnish available in the market as well as online. The most popular brand of wax varnish is Dorland’s Wax Medium.
2. To seal your painting you need a tub of varnish and a dust-free cloth. Use the dust-free cloth to take out some of the wax. Be gentle, otherwise, you may miss areas of the painting.
3. Start at the corner of the painting and proceed toward the right. You must be able to see where you are working and do not afraid, the wax will not smear your painting. Spread the wax, apply in a circular motion. Scoop up more wax as required. Do not let the cloth run dry.
4. Apply right up the edges to make sure the entire surface of the painting is perfectly and evenly covered. Let the wax dry and apply one or two more coatings to ensure you have appropriately covered the whole surface. You can leave this as your final coating.
5. You can also apply two extra coats of polyurethane varnish over the wax. Use a dust-free cloth to spread the varnish over the entire surface.
While drying these varnish let them place at the leveled surface so the varnish thickness remains even around the whole painting.
